Annucation, Leonardo da Vinci, 1472-1475, Oil and tempera on panel

The painting Annunciation is a depiction of a biblical story in the Bible in the book Luke. 1.26-39 The two subjects within the painting are said to be the angel Gabrial to the left, he is kneeling before the said to be virgin Mary, who is greeting Gabriel with a similar gesture of raising her hand. My personal impression before reading the details of the painting it looked to me that the angel was kneeling before God because the podium with the book resembles the classical understanding of what heaven looks like when god greets you at the gates. The painting as a whole is a good representation of renaissance painting. It depicts subjects in the classic greek roman style along with illusionistic quilting’s involved in the selection of the light contrasting dark.
