I have transgender family member whose safety, dignity, and access to opportunity depend on laws written decades ago. And right now, those laws \u2014 Title VII and Title IX \u2014 are being tested like never before.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As the Trump administration escalates its efforts to roll back transgender protections, understanding these two titles is essential. They\u2019re not just legal tools. They\u2019re lifelines.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcdc Title VII: Protecting Transgender Workers<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Passed as part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VII prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. In 2020, the Supreme Court ruled in Bostock v. Clayton County that discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation is discrimination \u201cbecause of sex\u201d \u2014 and therefore illegal under Title VII.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Transgender people cannot be fired, harassed, or denied jobs due to their identity.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Employers must respect names, pronouns, and access to gender-affirming facilities.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>No proof of surgery or documentation is required for protection.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces these rights, and they remain intact \u2014 for now.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83c\udfeb Title IX: Protecting Transgender Students<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded education programs. Over time, courts and federal agencies have interpreted this to include gender identity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But in 2025, the Trump administration is aggressively challenging that interpretation:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Executive Order 14201 bans transgender girls and women from participating in girls\u2019 and women\u2019s sports.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The Department of Education is investigating Minnesota schools for allowing transgender athletes to compete.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Federal funding is being threatened for states that defy the administration\u2019s interpretation of Title IX.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is a direct attack on transgender students \u2014 and a distortion of Title IX\u2019s original purpose.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcf0 News Spotlight: Minnesota vs. Trump<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Just this week, the Trump administration gave Minnesota schools a 10-day ultimatum: ban transgender girls from girls\u2019 sports or lose federal funding.
